Betsy Ross often told her children and grandchildren the story of the fateful day in May, 1776 when three members of a secret committee from the Continental Congress visited her at home in Philadelphia. George Washington, Robert Morris, and George Ross her late husband’s uncle had a request – would she sew the first flag? Hi, I’m Tom Ellsworth from Sherwood Oaks Christian Church with a minute message.

Washington presented her with a rough sketch which called for six point stars. As the story is told, Betsy, a seamstress and upholsterer, show General Washington how by carefully folding the material a 5-point star could be made with one snip of the scissors. Impressed, they commissioned her with the job and the rest is history.

This Saturday, June 14th, we Americans will observe “Flag Day” commemorating the date in 1777 when the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as our official national flag. This glorious banner reminds us of the price of liberty. Of those who signed the Declaration of Independence, five executed for treason; nine died fighting on the battle field; and twelve lost everything they owned. Freedom is costly. This week, offer a prayer for our nation and for all who live under the Red, White and Blue.
