Piecemakers Ministry Makes Impact

Oct 15, 2014

When the Piecemakers Ministry first began in the old church building, members brought their own sewing machines and supplies to create beautiful, handmade items for local agencies and centers. As the church changed locations and the ministry grew, the Piecemakers needed space of their own, and we consider ourselves blessed to have the Acorn Room (connected to the Bus Barn outside door 5). The Acorn Room is equipped with sewing machines and necessary materials to do many community projects, including:

  • baking communion bread disc that are in the trays each Sunday,
  • breast cancer bags for Olcott Center,
  • items for nursing homes, CPC, and Hannah House,
  • stillborn baby gowns for IU Health Bloomington Hospital,
  • walker bags for in-home patients through the hospital,
  • items for Monroe Hospital,
  • and fleece hats for boys and girls at Christmas time for the Boys and Girls Club.

A label is sown in each piece donated that says, “Made especially for you by SOCC Piecemakers.” This gets our name out to people that we reach out to help in our community.

Over the years many women have been involved in Piecemakers. Currently we average 25 to 30 dedicated ladies. One of my favorite things about being part of the group is the close bond we all share. Also seeing ladies know that they are using their talents and their hands to show their love to others in our community.

At our normal monthly meeting we work on the projects mentioned above. In addition, different members of the ministry meet most Tuesdays and Thursdays. Presently we are very busy getting ready for our annual Craft Fair/Bazaar, which is October 25 from 9:00am to 3:00pm in Fellowship Hall. Proceeds from the Bazaar go to mission work, local needs, church debt and to help offset our operating costs. It's a great day of fun, fellowship, awesome gifts and food! Last year we raised almost $10,000!

We invite any one who would want to be involved with Piecemakers to come by the Acorn Room most Tuesdays and Thursdays. Our regular monthly meeting is the first Thursday each month at 9:00am.
