Tom's Minute Message (August 21)

Aug 21, 2014Tom Ellsworth

When looking for happiness, most people focus on themselves. We tend to believe that contentment comes from satisfying our own wants, but in reality it’s just the opposite. Hi, I’m Tom Ellsworth from Sherwood Oaks Christian Church with a minute message.

Focus your attention on meeting the needs of others and you’ll discover great joy. This sign was posted in a volunteer center:

  • If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap.
  • If you want happiness for a day, go fishing.
  • If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune.
  • If you want happiness for a lifetime, help someone else.

It’s true – our lives are most fulfilled when we invest in others. Shortly, students from all around the world will converge upon Bloomington to study at IU. Many will be away from home, family and culture for the very first time; they will feel overwhelmed. So take the opportunity to welcome our global guests and help them feel at home among us. Their graciousness will encourage you far more than you have helped them. Jesus said that the greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and your neighbor as yourself. When you focus first on God and others you will find happiness!
