Give it your best shot; don’t settle for second best; always put your best foot forward. These American idioms all mean the same thing – do your best. Hi, I’m Tom Ellsworth from Sherwood Oaks Christian Church with a minute message.

The story is told of an elderly couple who entered a Philadelphia hotel lobby late one rainy night. Despite the hour, the night clerk responded graciously, "I’m sorry - we don't have any good rooms left; only a small room remains. It's not much, but I'll have the night housekeeper, clean it up. Just wait here a few moments. I don’t want to send you out on this rainy night."

Shortly, the room was ready with fresh flowers and hot tea. The night clerk’s best efforts did not go unnoticed. The older couple was Mr. and Mrs. John Jacob Astor, who shortly thereafter built a grand hotel in New York City known as the Waldorf Astoria. And guess who Mr. Astor hired to manage his new hotel? Of course, the night clerk who had treated him with such grace.

God gives us daily opportunities to make a difference – don’t settle for second best. Who knows how God will use you when you give it your best shot.
