Even the Cuttlefish

I was watching a nature documentary with my son as he was fighting sleep. It is a frequent middle-of-the-night activity at our house these days when the teething pains are rough. Fellow parents, I am sure you have many similar stories. As a cuttlefish came across the screen, my first thought was that it looked like a character from Pirates of the Caribbean, but then my mind drifted as it often does.

“So, God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good” (Genesis 1:21). How interesting is it that God thought the Earth needed this specific creature?

Recently, Pastor Tim asked us what questions we have about the Holy Spirit, and I was curious about examples of the Spirit in the Old Testament. He reminded us that at the very beginning, the Spirit was present. “The Earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters” (Genesis 1:2).

While I find it intriguing that God thought we needed the cuttlefish, it is even more wonderful knowing that in those early days, God had a plan. As the Spirit was hovering over the Earth, it was helping to prepare the way for you and me. Maybe this is one of the reasons that I feel most connected to God while outside in nature, with all his other creations. Where or when do you find it easiest to connect with the Spirit?
