Sherwood Kids Core

Why Core Classes?
In January 2025 the congregation took the Church Pulse Survey to explore the needs and desires of the church.  Through that survey, we learned that many of you are seeking a deeper connection with God.  We heard you, and we want to provide the space for deeper connection and spiritual growth.  Our prayer through this is that our church would be equipped and empowered with fresh excitement and love for the Lord, spurring us on to share the Good News with others.

What are Core Classes?
This winter, Sherwood Oaks is continuing something special — Core Classes on Wednesday nights, where we’ll grow deeper in faith together. From January 14 through February 18, we’re inviting everyone — every age, every Connect Group, every ministry — to come together for six weeks for shared learning, connection, and growth.

We’ll kick things off with a pitch-in dinner on January 14 — bring a side or dessert to share. After that, classes will meet weekly from 6:00 to 7:30pm. You’re welcome to arrive early and bring your own meal — we’ll have space for that. We'll offer classes at the Bloomington campus online this season (see the list below) along with a class from Iglesia Hispana for our Spanish-speaking community. There’s something for everyone — and that includes your kids! We’ll have engaging children’s programming available each week. We’ll wrap up this journey with a special Worship Night on February 18.

Let’s grow deeper together this winter. We can’t wait to join you on this journey.

Bloomington Core Classes:

Better Together - Every Part Matters, Including Yours

Taught by Shawn Green

Description: Church isn’t just a place you go, it’s a people you belong to and a mission you live out. In this 4-week class, we’ll explore what it means to be a partner in the life and mission of our church. Through Scripture, discussion, and practical next steps, you’ll discover how God has uniquely designed you to contribute to the body of Christ. Whether you’re new here or ready to take a next step, this is your invitation to move from attending to partnering, because we truly are better together!

Hear and Respond : Learning How to Have a Conversational Friendship with Jesus

Taught by Matt Nussbaum

Description: Like any good friendship and/or marriage, conversation is vital to a thriving relationship. That’s the kind of relationship Jesus wants with you. And…just like in any good friendship or good marriage, there are habits (disciplines) that nurture the life-giving intimacy with Jesus that we long for. We will explore habits like (1) reading the Bible; (2) prayer; (3) generosity; (4) fasting; (5) silence/solitude; …and others – within the larger context of how they nurture a joy-filled friendship with Jesus. This is for people who have followed Jesus for years AND for people who are recent converts to follow Jesus…and everyone in between. Anyone who hungers for more in their relationship with Jesus.

Storyline Bible Study: How to Read the Bible

Taught by Josh and Laura Reynolds

Do you read the Bible—or the Bible’s Storyline? This Core Class helps you see Scripture not as isolated verses but as God's unified story and our lives as Jesus' disciples. Following a simple Storyline path, Bible readers of all levels can participate—everyone is welcome!

We’ll read the Gospel of Luke together, have conversations, provide tools to dig deeper, and offer a daily reading plan with prompts. By the end of 4 weeks, you will have read the whole book of Luke! You’ll gain skills to read the Bible, ask better questions, and see how every passage fits into God’s big Storyline, deepening your discipleship.

We are called to make disciples. Leading children to know the life changing power of Jesus in their lives couldn't be more important work. Sherwood Kids Core this fall will be focused on knowing God in a personal way. We will be introducing students to the ways they can know God by meditating on His Word, praying in every situation and being empowered to study the Bible on their own. We pray every leader and student will walk away knowing they are fully known and loved by Jesus and have practical, new ways to know God more. Bloomington Sherwood Kids Core

Join us this fall on Wednesday nights for Sherwood Kids Core for children ages 6 weeks through 5th grade. The Sherwood Kids Core dates are aligned with SOCC's Core Classes that are also happening from 6:00-7:30pm. If your children have attended AWANA in the past, this is very similar and will be taking the place of that program. Each evening will include a time for games, worship, a Bible lesson with an application activity. We'll be focusing on what it means to follow Jesus, including spiritual disciplines such as reading the Bible, memorizing Scripture and sharing our faith.

We will have a separate registration for Sherwood Kids Core (winter sessions) which will run from January 21-February 18, including an option to participate in leading worship during the Christmas season.
