Getting Caught Up in the Rules

As we walk through Colossians it seems to be increasingly clear that they struggled with some of the same issues we struggle with. They were getting caught up in rules regarding side issues, local philosophies influenced by other religions and idol worship.

It is so easy to get sidetracked, just try and accomplish one task at home or at work and see how many distractions pop up along the way that keep you from getting the original job done. As I write this, I am bombarded with texts, emails, phone calls, etc. that vie for my attention. Because of all the distractions, it is so easy to lose our focus on the main thing. According to Renew.org, the main theme of Colossians is Christ is all; you need no supplements! If you are in Christ, you've received God's fullness and have everything you need for living fully for Him. So, if we allow Christ to occupy the throne of our heart, if we hand over the keys to Him, if we seek Him more than any other person, position, plaudit, priority, possession or pleasure then we will find the life truly worth living; a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.

Of course, we can't even surrender or yield in our own strength and that is where the Holy Spirit comes in, guiding us into all truth, opening our eyes to what is most important and providing us the courage to do the right thing at the right time. Let's keep focused, like a laser on Jesus, the light of the world.
