How Do You Spend Your Hours?

Aug 8, 2023

I was reading The Screwtape Letters recently and I realized something fascinating about how I approach my time management. The hours in each day are often regarded as our own by right, and we always get to choose how we spend those hours. If our schedule doesn’t go as planned, or we’re interrupted by any variation of things, we feel slighted that those hours are taken away from us.

CS Lewis put it poignantly when he said (paraphrasing), “If God Himself came down and told us in person that we must stop what we’re doing and listen to the overly chatty person about the troubles of their day, we would be ecstatic that that is all He commanded of us.” Yet how often are we in that position and are frustrated that our time might not be used valuably? Are we the best judges of how to spend our time? I suppose that’s one resource we can never really get more of. So how do we truly serve God, the inventor of Time, with what we have left?
