The Word's Power in Helping Make Big Decisions

Do you ever make plans that don’t work out and get pretty upset when they don’t? I am not talking about picking out an outfit, just to find out the shirt doesn’t actually go well with the pants. Although, I’ll admit, there have been times when that on top of a bad day has gotten me more upset than I’d like to admit. I am talking about a bigger plan, like changing careers, trying to grow your family, moving to a new town or state, or… fill in the blank!

I was recently talking with a friend about making a big decision, similar to one of those listed above. And she said this to me: “the more you are in God’s Word, the more you can tell if you’re hearing your own voice or God’s voice when it comes to making decisions.”
Woah. Of course, I wanted her to say what I wanted to hear. Something like “go for whatever feels right…do the thing that makes you happy…oh, God just wants you to be happy with your decisions.” But after repeating her words back in my mind, I realized how thankful I was for that non-secular advice. I had made a goal to read a book of the Bible each month and oh, imagine this, I was really far behind.

How can I pretend to know God’s will for my life when I don’t even keep up with my end of our relationship by reading His Word? And as a Christian of many years, I know I’m not always going to hear His voice as clear as day BUT don’t I want to give it my all? Isn’t following Jesus worth that?

When have you noticed digging into God’s Word changing the way you view big (or small) decisions?
