A New Beginning

Revelation 21.9-22.21

In this last scene of his vision, John is transported to the very end of time. What he sees is not an end, but a new beginning—a new heaven and a new earth. The tree of life comes back into the story and becomes a place of “healing for the nations” (22.2). Using words that can hardly represent what he experiences, John describes the beauty and grandeur of this holy city. What John sees, as fantastic as it is, cannot compare with who John sees there.

And the throne of God and of the Lamb will sit prominently in the city. God’s servants will continually serve and worship Him. They will be able to look upon His face, and His name will be written on their foreheads. Darkness will never again fall on this city. They will not require the light of a lamp or of the sun because the Lord God will be their illumination. By His light, they will reign throughout the ages (22.3-5).

There is much speculation about what happens at the end of the world. Those in the Bible who encountered the presence of God through a vision are clear on one thing. The glory of God is overwhelming. Nothing else seems to matter in the light of His presence. We should not be overly concerned about what will happen, but be comforted with who awaits us.

The very presence of God will light this new world and he will reign forever and ever and ever! Even so, come quickly Lord Jesus!
