Astonishing Things

In Daniel chapters 11 and 12, Daniel sees prophecy right before his eyes. He wonders how long until his visions become reality and says, “How long will it be before these astonishing things are fulfilled?”

That one question conveys many emotions: longing, awe, excitement, and wonder are but a few.

I believe the invention of our emotions comes directly from God. I feel close to him when I think about that deeply and I’d like to break down the above emotions… especially around this Christmas season where longing, awe, excitement, and wonder “fill the air” for many.

Longing: Ask yourself what you long for. God cares about our wants and needs and so even if you long for something that might seem frivolous to some, don’t feel guilty.

Awe: Is there something you’ve read, heard, or seen that was awe inspiring? Remember it and keep it near to your heart, especially when your spiritual life feels a little dry.

Excitement: This one is hard for me. It was so easy to get excited about something when I was young and now that I’m an adult I find myself always thinking what’s coming up next and never enjoying the present. Be still and look around. Get excited about something special that perhaps you see every day.

Wonder: I suggest going to God in prayer and being still. I find myself feeling that sense of wonder when I do so. Have a thankful heart in your prayer but don’t use words. Be still and know that he is God.
