2 Peter 1

What do you think you need? Take one minute right now and really think…what do you think you need?

Peter left everything to follow Jesus: his home, business, friends and family. Yet when he wrote this letter near the end of his life, he could confidently say that God had given him everything he needed. He understood that knowing Jesus was more valuable than material possessions or earthly concerns.

Life is challenging and none of us will escape the challenges, the curve ball, the wall. And if you haven’t experienced it, you will! But this is what we find we need: when God is all you have, God is all you need. “His divine power has given us everything we need…”

I heard Dudley Rutherford speak at Sherwood Oaks on a Sunday morning and his message was on the power of God…the strength of God. He told us the greek word for power is dunamis, which translate to miraculous power, dynamite strength. He said the way he remembers the word dunamis…and this is for us Indiana Hoosier basketball fans…is: Do Not Miss! Dunamis, power, strength, mighty. God is dunamis. God’s divine power gives us everything we need for life. He never misses.

In 2 Peter 1:5, Peter encourages us to ‘make every effort’ to add solid values to our faith that continues to grow. I picture God as an orchestra leader with His hands held high, motioning for us to add goodness to our faith; and once those ‘notes’ meld, to add knowledge to our goodness; and then self-control, and perseverance, godliness and love. He knows that in this life if we continue to add on all He has given to us, like Peter, we will know that Jesus is more valuable than anything else we seek.
