Back to Haiti for a site visit. Haiti was the first place I ever explored life outside of the US - when I was a sophomore in high school. As I look back I believe the experience changed the trajectory of my young life.
During a post-Christmas gift distribution, a young boy lying on a mat in a tuberculosis center held onto my leg and said in Creole,"Help me, I'm dying."
It was my birthday and he was about my age. All I could think was "What right do I have to stand here, healthy and strong, and walk away back into my life of comfort when he may not live to see another Christmas."
I'm glad that God has never let me "walk away" from that experience. My hope is that I'll be able to meet that young man at the Great Reunion - to thank him for the many ways that he and that moment have impacted my life.
