Habakkuk

Dec 19, 2013

Habakkuk has become of my favorite Old Testament prophets.  The book itself is a conversation between Habakkuk and God and I love to read quotes from God himself, hanging on each word and trying to get a clear glimpse of His character and personality.  But Habakkuk himself resonate with me personally.

Based on Habakkuk’s part of this conversation, he could have been dubbed the ‘Doubting Thomas” of his day or even a complainer stating the injustices and seeming absence of God as evil prevailed. But at some point, haven’t we all wondered “Why”?  Why are there injustices in our lives and in the world and will God ever make it right?  But God is patient and reassures the prophet that He does care and is working in the background.  One of my all-time favorite verses is in God’s first reply Hab 1: 5 “Look among the nations! Observe! Be astonished! Wonder! Because I am doing something in your days— You would not believe if you were told”. This is Gods reassurance not only to Habakkuk but to us that he is always at work, often behind the scenes, making way for His divine plans.

Habakkuk is one guy to which I can truly relate! Perhaps you too have experienced sin and wickedness in your personal life and ask Why?  But when my faith takes over my fears and hope is restored, I am reminded of God’s own words to Habakkuk that he does see the injustices and evil will not prevail.  May we be driven to our knees in gratitude and praise for the amazing, fatherly care that our God bestows on us.  The sovereign Lord is our strength!
