Hebrews 1 & 2
There are a lot of super hero movies coming out these days: Batman, Superman, Captain America, and Spiderman just to name a few. We can see the story of Jesus in these movies. There is a crisis, a problem and one of these characters will come to save the day. And in many of these movies we see that the people that loved these characters quickly turned against them. These movie heroes fight through it, and do what is right through the adversity, doing what is best for the people.
We know these movies are fake and that the characters are not real, but we don’t really think about how this is the story of Jesus. Before Jesus entered the world as a baby there was a crisis, a big problem. And that problem was sin, all of our sin that separated us from God and sin that brings all this evil into the world. Jesus entered the world and not only saved the day but effectively killed death through being a sacrifice for all this sin, all this evil around us. Jesus went through this pain and torture that is unimaginable to save us, even though all the people that were once cheering Jesus on turned on him. He stayed true to his calling and went through with God’s plan.
On this Easter Sunday may we remember Jesus and not only his perfect life, and his death as a sacrifice for all the evil in the world but also the victory Jesus had over death, the victory we all have right now because of who Jesus is and what he did! Jesus is the super hero we all want! He saved us not because of anything we have done right, but because Jesus is love. And we have the opportunity to share this victory with everyone! This passage in Hebrews reminds us that God is for us, he wants the best for us, and will go to incredible lengths just to be with us. This is why God’s plan is better than our plan. It may be a bumpy ride, but there is victory in the past, in the present and in the future.
