John 1:1-18 is the introduction to John’s “cosmic” gospel. It begins and ends with Jesus unified with God. John previews Jesus cosmic journey from heaven to earth to the grave to His return to the Father’s side. The benefit of Jesus journey hangs in the balance at verse 12. “To all who received Him, to those who believe in His name,” have the hope of brotherhood with Jesus and adoption as God’s children. John tells us where his gospel is going in his introduction and proceeds to go there as the Jesus story unfolds for the purpose of all who believe having eternal life. Think of the parabolic sweep of Jesus’ ministry to humanity. In John’s first 18 verses we have the blueprint of His saving rescue mission.
