As we celebrate our nation’s birth, pause to remember everyone who made it possible. Hi, I’m Tom Ellsworth from Sherwood Oaks Christian Church with a minute message.
The names of our country’s famous founders are well known, but John Hanson, Israel Bissell, Mary Pickersgill and Sam Wilson also helped shape our country. Under the Articles of Confederation in 1781 John Hanson was unanimous elected by Congress as President of the United States – our first one! Paul Revere road 20 miles to warn of the British approach but Israel Bissell road a record 350 miles in 6 days warning patriots from Massachusetts to Philadelphia. Betsy Ross may have created the first flag, but Mary Pickersgill sewed the massive flag unfurled over Ft. McHenry that became the inspiration for the Star Spangled Banner. And in the War of 1812 Sam Wilson supplied salted meats to the new American army. Affectionately known by his employees as Uncle Sam, you can guess what he inspired.
These lesser known patriots were just as instrumental in creating the quest for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Most of us will never be famous, but we all matter when it comes to making this country the best it can be!
