I have certainly enjoyed watching some of the winter Olympics over these last two weeks. The games always leave us with some valuable life lessons. Hi, I’m Tom Ellsworth from Sherwood Oaks Christian Church with a minute message.
I remember when Cathy Rigby participated as a member of the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics team during the 1972 Olympics in Munich. On the day she performed, she prayed for strength to get through her routine without making mistakes. Her performance went well, but not judged high enough for a medal. Cathy was crushed. She joined her parents in the stands and choked out the words, “I’m sorry. I did my best.” Her mother responded, “You know that and I know that, and I’m sure God knows that, too.” Then her mother added ten words that Cathy never forgot, “Doing your best is more important than being the best.”
Not everyone can bring home the gold. Only one candidate wins an election, only one contestant wins the grand prize, only one applicant gets the job. Life is filled with disappointments and unfulfilled dreams, but God never asked us to be number one. Remember, doing your best is always more important than being the best!
