Our Only Hope

Read Revelation 13

There was a time much earlier in my Christian walk where understanding who & what the first and second "beast" represented would have been a much higher priority. The truth is, in my youthful spiritual arrogance, I used to believe I actually had a pretty good understanding of the symbolism, major players, and timelines outlined throughout the book of Revelations. Such is now not the case. A major theme in this portion of scripture is spiritual (as well as literal) warfare. "It was also given to him to make war with the saints and overcome them..." (Rev. 13:7). I am convinced that a perfect understanding and correct interpretation of this portion of scripture would actually make little difference in my preparedness to engage in spiritual battle. Make no mistake about it, we are, as children of His kingdom, engaged in spiritual warfare. Satan is a very real enemy who seeks to destroy us.

I am reminded of the story found in Luke 10:1-20 when the jubilant disciples of Jesus returned following their being sent out on a ministry of healing and casting out demons. They were ecstatic over the miracles and powerful working of God's Spirit through them. Jesus spoke to them and said, "Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven." (Luke 10:19-20). So what will make the difference In terms of preparedness for service in His kingdom? The answer is found in a deeply intimate, vibrant, and growing relationship with the Lord Jesus! We will only be victorious over the enemy of our soul (battling within) and the beast which exercises authority over the world's systems and values when we are firmly established one the One who inscribed our names before the foundation of the world! Take Joy!
