The God Who Defends

Dec 5, 2013

Do you ever feel like everything is falling down around you? In those moments, does it feel like there is no one that could save you? Nothing that could possibly fix the situation, redeem what has been lost, or heal the hurt you have felt?

I think all of those things are inevitable situations in life. We are all going to, at times, feel alone in a seemingly hopeless fight. But the truth is, God promises his defense in our lives. He assures us that He will rescue the righteous, guard those who are faithful to Him, and, moreover, heal what has been hurt.

God proves this promise through the way He interacts with His people in the Bible. In Ezekiel 26, a prophecy is detailed in which God promises to destroy the nation of Tyre for their defeat of Judah and their gloating in doing so. The Lord is not ambiguous in how he will do this; He clearly states the ways in which He will reduce the nation to rubble and never allow it to be rebuilt again.

By destroying Tyre, God is answering a plea similar to that of David, who says,

Wake up! Rise to my defense! Take up my case, my God and my Lord. Declare me not guilty, O Lord my God, for you give justice. Don't let my enemies laugh about my troubles. Don’t let them say, ‘Look we got what we wanted! Now we will eat him alive!’ May those who rejoice at my troubles be humiliated and disgraced. May those who triumph over me be covered with shame and dishonor. (Psalm 36:23-26, NLT)

In the same way that God defended His people in the Bible, He defends His people today. So, when you find yourself powerless in a situation, pray to the Lord Almighty to take up your case. He will not forsake those who love Him and call on His name.
